You've had an amazing successful and varied career thus far, including your solo work, working and touring with Loreena McKennitt, Greek recording artist Evanthia Reboutsika, and The Chieftains, among others. Is there a particular period or tour that stands out above all the rest at this point?

No, not really, they are all projects that I enjoy doing and immerse myself in them at the moment. Once they are complete I move on to the next project. I have fond memories though of many of my past projects.

You play a number of exotic stringed instruments besides guitar. Which of these did you find the most challenging to master?

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say I am a master of any of the instruments that I play. I'm always learning something new. The Oud would have to be one that is trickier than the rest but a very rewarding and enjoyable instrument to play.

Is there something about doing a "live" recording like your latest album that's especially satisfying relative to a studio project?

Yes, I think it's the immediacy of the moment and the interaction with the band & audience that makes the "Live" recording very satisfying. It is a moment in time, captured.

You're originally from Canada, but live now in Southern California. What's your favorite destination when you're not working?

I have been on the road so much the last few year's that it is always great to come to home Southern California. We have a little holiday planned to Mexico in a few months time and I'm looking forward to that as well.

Who are some of your favorite new artists?

I really like pianist Tord Gustavsen, his last 3 recording for ECM are great. I saw his trio at the Jazz Bakery a few months ago and it was an excellent show. I'm also listening to a group from Brazil called Bossacucanova, very fun, upbeat music.

What is your take on where Smooth Jazz as a format is today in its evolution, and in what direction would you like to see it move from this point forward?

Hmmm... play more Brian Hughes !!! Just kidding... I think I would like to see the format get a little more adventurous.
